MS16 Sixteen-track:
-
-
- Tascam MS16 with VU-meter unit and
the DBX noise reduction units
-
- My beloved 16-track... It needs 1
inch tape and was manufactured somewhere in the early 90's.
- I got the auto locator as well (=
remote control with locate functionality).
-
- What can I say about this? I like it!
Operating it is easy and comfortable. The audio quality is
great, as it compresses the audio a bit. It has a three-head
configuration: erase, sync and repro - sync head is what is
used during tracking, it is the record head and it also
plays back the tracks already recorded so everything stays
in sync; the repro head is a dedicated head optimized for
playback - this is what you use during mixdown.
- The 16-track is linked to my Tascam
TSR8 eight-track via the Tascam MTS1000 Midiizer (the MS16
being the master).
-
- According to my
fellow band mates it makes the drums sound fatter and
punchier than when recorded on the TSR8.
- Hear for yourself: the song “The End
Of Time” was entirely recorded on the MS16. Check it
here.
-
- Can’t say anything bad about it: it
works every time and is a very sturdy machine.
- Perhaps this: it is a bit slower in
rewinding and fast forward than the TSR8, and it weighs a
ton! It is really heavy, no kidding.
- Also the 1 inch tape format is a bit
harder to find and is quite costly.
-
-
- Here’s a picture of it, I’ve build
the rack around it myself out of MDF:
